Required Attendance: Live October Seminar

Course Grade: S/F

Seminar Description

A survey conducted by the American Society for Training and Development (1997) found that four out of five corporations surveyed strive to promote emotional intelligence in their employees through training and professional development. In addition they are evaluating employee performance and establishing hiring practices based on employees' ability to handle themselves, get along with people, work in teams and take appropriate leadership roles.

In this seminar we will explore what it means to bring emotional intelligence to work. We will review and discuss research that illuminates the place of emotional intelligence in the workplace as well as identify the business costs of emotional ineptitude. We analyze theoretical and empirical aspects of emotional intelligence and apply best practices to social situations in the workplace.

Required Attendance & Assignment: Students are required to attend the seminar and complete a follow-up assignment in which they develop a training and professional development plan for employees in the workplace (based on selected case studies).
