Statement:
Hi, my name is Debby Poris. I am currently a DDP senior, seeking my Business degree in Management and Operations with a minor in HR. I have enjoyed serving our student body in the role of as Secretary for 2007-2008 and President for the 2008-2009 school year. I look forward to serving you this coming year. I have also served as the Public Relations Committee Chair and S & A Fee Committee Chair.
I live in Lynnwood, Washington with my husband Carl. Our current "children" are two Bichons, Maxwell Smart and Agent 99 (Max & 99 for short). I have two incredible sons and six beautiful grandchildren (14, 10, 7, and 3 year-old triplets).
Currently I work full-time for the Housing Finance Commission, a State agency in Seattle, as a fiscal analyst III. I graduated from Bellevue Community College with my transfer degree in June of 2006 and began my WSU education August of 2006.
This past year has afforded many opportunities to meet many wonderful people, which includes DDP staff and other DDP students such as you. I have had the pleasure of working with my other student government leaders. The DDP student leaders are an exceptional group of talented and dedicate students who take time out of their busy schedules to find ways to enhance the DDP student's WSU experience. I am proud to serve with them.
This past summer we saw many changes to WSU and the reduction of resources available to DDP students. The loss of the learning centers was devastating. The increase of tuition was not a crowd pleaser either. The next couple of years are going to be challenging and your student government is up for that challenge. It is my goal to work together with other branch campuses to promote student welfare and education needs through the Washington Student Association (student lobby group). ASWSU-DDP will work closely with other branch Directors of Legislative Affairs (DLA) to ensure that WSU students' collective voice is heard. To do that, I am setting up a DDP DLA position for this school year. This will ensure that DDP students' needs and concerns are heard.
In addition, your student leaders will be looking for new opportunities to provide resources to you. The changes that have occurred give us the opportunity to think outside of the box to provide fun, destination events. It will be the committees that will be looking at ways to enhance your WSU experience and provide resources to ensure your success in achieving your degree. They will also need students, like you, that can spend a few hours a month to find solutions and plan events. I encourage you to join a committee today.
I will continue to bring more visibility to the collective DDP student body. This will be done through individual meetings with DDP staff and WSU's executive branch. Together with Larry, Vice President, we will continue to be active in the Student Government Council and the President's Student Advisory Board. In addition, I will continue to communicate with the Bookie Board of Directors to ensure that students have better access to textbooks and book returns as well as become recognized as a viable branch campus so that we can participate in the annual dividend allocation.
If you have any questions, suggestions, or concerns, please feel free to contact me at dporis@wsu.edu. I am excited to have another opportunity to serve the ASWSU-DDP student body this year.
